If you have been scrolling through job boards wondering why some drivers are pulling $4,200 a week while others barely clear $1,800, you are not alone. We pulled salary data from over 47,000 active CDL postings across all 50 states, plus interviewed 200+ placed drivers, to build the definitive 2026 pay guide.
1. Hazmat Tanker - $0.82 to $1.05 CPM
Hazmat tanker drivers sit at the top of the pay pyramid. The combination of hazardous cargo, strict endorsements, and high liability means carriers pay a premium. Companies like Schneider Bulk and Liquid Transport pay experienced tanker drivers north of $0.90 CPM, with weekly settlements often exceeding $3,800. The catch? You need your Hazmat and Tanker endorsements, plus a clean background.
2. Flatbed OTR Owner-Op - $1.85 to $2.40 per mile
If you own your truck and can secure freight, flatbed OTR is where the real money lives. TMC Transportation and Landstar both reported average owner-op settlements above $12,000 per week for their top flatbed lanes in Q1 2026. The key is avoiding broker freight and building direct shipper relationships.
3. Reefer Team Dedicated - $3,400 to $4,100 per week
Grocery and pharma dedicated lanes pay team drivers extremely well because the freight is time-sensitive and high-value. J.B. Hunt and Marten Transport both have grocery dedicated contracts paying $3,400/week guaranteed minimum for teams. Solo reefer drivers typically see $0.72 to $0.84 CPM.
4. Heavy Haul / Oversized - $2.10 to $3.50 per mile
Moving construction equipment, wind turbine parts, or military vehicles requires specialized trailers, permits, and escorts. The pay reflects the complexity. Heavy haul drivers with 5+ years experience routinely clear $15,000 per month.
5. LTL Linehaul - $32 to $42 per hour
Old Dominion, FedEx Freight, and XPO LTL all pay linehaul drivers hourly with overtime after 8 hours. Senior linehaul drivers in the Northeast regularly pull $95,000 to $110,000 per year with full benefits and pension.
What is driving pay up in 2026?
- Driver shortage at 80,000+ open positions
- New FMCSA regulations reducing available hours
- Inflation-adjusted contracts renewed in Q4 2025
- E-commerce pushing more regional and local freight
Our advice: Do not chase the highest CPM blindly. Look at weekly minimum guarantees, home time, and benefits. A $0.68 CPM job with a $3,000/week guarantee and home every weekend often beats a $0.85 CPM job with no floor and 21 days out.
